Some days are hard. Some days it’s all you can do to get out of bed. Some days it’s resting on the couch for 18+ hours. Others it means canceling plans last minute (pre ‘rona ) and these days it means being shelter in place for going on 4 months. It means stumbling, dropping things, forgetting your own history. It means being in some sort of pain almost 24/7. It means losing your career, and learning to pivot life’s expectations. • • Just because it’s not a huge part of my content, it’s my every day. Having Multiple Sclerosis has upended every part of my life. I’m legally and medically disabled. It’s a big part of my life but it’s not *who* I am. • • I’m an unicorn lover. Horses feed my soul, with fitness a close second. I love cats, and a good curry. I love helping and teaching others. Empowering others to discover what they are capable of which is why I’m becoming a personal trainer. • • One of the things I love seeing here on social media is the reminder that your body isn’t you. Fun fact: Saturday was the first time I wore shorts to the gym, in 4 years.... FOUR!! Did you know... I still struggle with body image. So here’s the deal. I have grown SO MUCH in this area of my life over the last year and a half. I’m way less insecure and more confident than I’ve ever been. But, I’m still human. Just because I work on myself a lot and do personal development everyday, doesn’t mean I don’t struggle. I looked at myself in the mirror on Saturday and almost said “EW,” But stopped myself and walked out the door. Yeah, I had a negative thought, but I wasn’t going to let that ruin my day. I reminded myself that I am beautiful no matter what, not because of my body. But because I am healthy, strong, in shape & that’s all I care about. I took my thoughts Captive. The shadow self drops and rolls and hides and weaves. It’s so clever at reflecting itself onto others that we don’t even see it’s there. Shadow work is icky and heavy and painful but the pay off is oh so good! FREEEEEDOM! Shadow work is about uncovering the parts of ourselves that we have denied because we believe we won’t be loved or accepted if we embrace them. As a kid we were shamed for this part of us, or we saw someone close to us be shamed or not loved for this aspect of themselves, so we tuck it away in a part within us called our shadow believing if we don’t show that part of us we will be loveable and accepted. But it never really goes away, it is just wearing an invisibility cloak like Harry Potter. Because we’ve buried it, it makes it REALLY hard to see. But the way we can tell what’s down there is through what we project onto others. Where you judge, shame and make other people wrong is a red flag showing you where YOU have shadow work to do. Amazing hey! But this type of work takes practice and constant awareness. Our ego is so clever and when we project our shit onto someone else, it will feel like it really is their problem.. but it’s not, it’s ours. If you can notice the patterns, you will see that life is showing you what part of yourself you need to reclaim. 🖤 Once I’ve identified what parts of myself I’ve put into my shadow, I take it through Breathwork to completely release any shame and reintegrate and embrace it. Shadow work is about accepting and loving all the parts of you. Life so much easier when we aren’t hiding something away or worried someone might find out about x. When you own your shadow you stop projecting shame onto others. A global pandemic. Financial insecurity. Social isolation. A tattered economy. Racial injustice. Broken social systems. Loved ones suffering. And it’s only July. We still have six more months before 2020 releases us from its tumultuous grip, and - spoiler alert - 2021 is making no promises. It’s no wonder so many of us feel pummeled by the onslaught of stress and bad news, overwhelmed to the point of drowning. I want to offer you a lifeline. A practice I discovered about a year ago has been an incredible gift, helping me to survive, and even thrive, in these trying times. It’s called benevolent detachment. This is about letting go. It involves caring and engaging with the suffering of the world to a certain point, then releasing that burden. Benevolent detachment is NOT: 1. Ignoring other people’s pain 2. Closing yourself off emotionally 3. Being selfish or narcissistic Benevolent detachment IS: 1. Recognizing that you have mental and emotional limits 2. Doing your part to alleviate suffering within those limits 3. Letting go of your worry about people and situations, trusting others and a higher power to do what you cannot This practice allows me to care about and help others in a manageable, sustainable way. It helps me sleep at night. It helps me get other things done. It helps me still feel joy, even in difficult seasons. I learned about benevolent detachment from author John Eldredge. He writes this: “Mature adults have learned how to create healthy distance between themselves and the thing they have become entangled with. Thus the word ‘detachment.’ It means getting untangled, stepping out of the quagmire; it means peeling apart the Velcro by which this person, relationship, crisis, or global issue has attached itself to you. Or you to it. Detachment means getting some healthy distance. Social media overloads our empathy. So I use the word ‘benevolent’ in referring to this necessary kind of detachment because we’re not talking about cynicism or resignation. Benevolent means kindness. It means something done in love. Jesus invites us into a way of living where we are genuinely comfortable turning things over to him.” (LINK IN BIO TO READ THE REST... )

What expectation did you have in mind? If there is one thing I firmly believe in, it would be expectations are the number one killer in anything. And let's dig a little deeper-I'm talking about the ones you put on people without voicing it to them. I'm guilty of this. Why is it that we form a story line in our minds of how you want that person to be, act, perform, provide, support, give, etc. without voicing it to them first? Most of us can't read minds, but in this case we expect them to. Although we can't read minds, I know we can feel energy. Have you ever had someone be passive aggressive to you? It's probably because an expectation wasn't met. We can wrap up 100's of scenarios, but most of the time it's because we didn't fulfill their story line because we didn't know! Over the years, I have gotten much better at voicing my expectations. At first, it was hard and It felt weird, but over time I've noticed the people in my life respect me more because they know where I stand. If you find yourself constantly arguing with someone, ask yourself what is your expectation of them and then express to them how you feel so they understand where you are coming from. Additionally, ask yourself what YOU need, because sometimes only you can fill that cup and it's not the other persons job to do so. 3 things that NEVER belong in your diet👇🏼 1️⃣ Guilt 2️⃣ Shame 3️⃣ Stress If you ate or drank a little too much this weekend I’m here to tell you it’s OKAY. There’s no need to beat yourself up or overcompensate by restricting yourself or doing extra cardio. WHY?! Because one day doesn’t make or break progress. In fact, many meals that people associate with getting “off track” (hate that word lol ) are just as important for our overall wellness. ✅Were you able to enjoy your time with family or friends? ✅Were you able to eat a meal without thinking about calories/macros? ✅Did you get a meal you truly wanted?! ✅ Did you make memories? 👏🏼These things matter👏🏼 and if your “diet” doesn’t allow you to do these things then you gotta say ADIOS👋🏼 The best diet is one that promotes sustainability and makes you feel GOOD on a daily basis. One that never seems like a diet because it allows you to LIVE LIFE. I promise you that you don’t need to restrict yourself or cut out your favorite foods to make progress. Let’s get rid of the food guilt once and for all.

Not all workouts especially when it deals with body parts breakdown have to be drawn out. Spiritual does not have to mean religion. Spirituality as a concept is thrown around a lot and for me, I used to get weird around that concept because I always associated spirituality with religion. And the whole thing just seemed overwhelming; do I need to choose a specific religion? What books do I need to read? What do I need to learn? Where do I need to go and what do I need to do? But here’s the thing; when you really break it down, spirituality is simply the belief in something beyond ourselves. And it can be defined differently based on every single person’s unique version of that - so whether you call it source, universe, God, spirit, guides or something else, it doesn’t matter. It’s embracing something beyond yourself. My personal opinion is that it truly matters to have some spiritual aspect within your life. If we are constantly listening to the garbage that comes up in our minds, when it’s telling us to play small and do things that aren’t aligned with our highest selves, then we aren’t always being led right by our own minds. We need to look at and believe in and trust something bigger than just our fear based thinking. We need to be steps ahead instead of simply reacting to the garbage our mind spews at us and what helps us get there is leaning into those greater belief systems. Trusting that things enter and leave your life when they are supposed to. Belief that there is purpose behind every situation. Start small and start exploring what your beliefs really are. You don’t need to go all in and completely change everything about yourself overnight - but slowly just start exploring and. It starts with a little belief in something greater than yourself.

Are you “OVER” apologising? If you were to audit your apologies through out the day, would they all be truly necessary? Or are some of them used as a way to not be seen as ‘overbearing’, ‘bossy’ or asking for ‘too much’? As girls we’ve often been raised to value empathy over the "masculine" trait of strength — which means that, in situations where strength or assertiveness is required, we may feel the need to cushion our actions with an apology, whereas our male counterpart may not. In today’s post, I’ll be discussing how peppering our language with qualifiers like "I'm sorry, do you mind moving?”and "Sorry, I just have one more question”, can do us a disservice when aspiring to leadership roles. Apologies do matter, but when we apologise when there’s just no need (i.e. sharing an opinion, asking another question ), this unconsciously communicates that we don’t feel worthy of someone’s time, and effectively erodes at our confidence. These types of apologies can also negatively affect perceptions of competence by suggesting uncertainty or weakness. As leaders, communicating that we are in fact, not a burden, but a valuable contribution to the team dynamic is crucial for our ongoing success. I worked on this with one of my incredible clients, who was over apologising all of the time, particularly at work. So I got her to reframe her language so that instead of saying sorry, she would ask clarifying questions. She went from: I’m sorry for [x] —> I’m going to do [x], would that be okay with you? What this does is simultaneously communicate competence and warmth - that you know what you’re doing but you’re being considerate and thoughtful towards others about it. So reflect on your own communication practices and see where you can make the subtle but impactful shift away from over apologising towards unapologetically owning your needs, values and desires. You are so worthy of it. #notsorryforbeingme

Habit change. A change in your relationship with food. Behavioral change. Schedule change. Maybe a change in your social group. A change to know your body and steward it inside➡️out. And so much more. . If you could keep doing what you’re doing you wouldn’t have the goal in the first place. . So make a plan. But don’t just stop at making a plan like you have in the past, you have to actually do it. . You can only go on for so long not making a change until you are convinced you can’t change. .
