Dr. Turner’s Thai Red Curry Ingredients: Chopped small red onion 4-5 garlic cloves crushed 2-3 tsp thai red curry paste 1 can of coconut milk (my all time favourite is Avoy-D Coconut milk ) 2-3 chicken breasts 2-3 tsp garlic chili sauce 2 zucchinis chopped ½ – ¾ cup of fresh pineapple chopped Instructions: Mix onion, garlic and red curry paste together in frying plan for 10 minutes. Gradually add all other ingredients leaving out coconut milk and pineapple until the end. Simmer until chicken is cooked through then add coconut milk and pineapple. Serve with cauliflower rice (OR basmati rice if you have worked out today ). Pancakes make me smile on the inside and out. Using the 18/21 meal approach helps me to stay balanced and happy! Each week I select foods that are packed full of nutrients and on point with helping fuel my training and then 2-3 meals per week- it’s “whatever goes”. A flexible non diet approach brings joy to the mind and the body. Counting calories is just dam stressful and most of the time totally unnecessary. I was once that girl and funnily enough I ran faster and became leaner by listening to my body and fuelling it according using a very flexible wholefoods approach. If you are stuck on the calorie counting wheel, it is worth investing the time and energy in getting off it again. P.s these buckwheat blueberry pancakes were delicious 😁

The vast majority of our mental health clients currently or historically struggle with substance abuse. It is no coincidence that the vast majority of that same population have also survived deep, sustained trauma. There is still so much judgement and condemnation of people who can’t manage their alcohol, stay sober, smoke crack, etc. We have all at some point thought “just get it together”. Abusing drugs and alcohol is most commonly a reaction to pain, unhealed grief, PTSD. A reaction to trauma-to shit that you don’t know how to make peace with. When we encounter it in our clients, family, friends, remind yourself that that behavior is likely secondary to emotions that are intolerable to manage without the analgesia of intoxication. Resistant starch is a foreign thing to so many, but as we collectively grow towards healthier lifestyles through diet, it’s the talk of the town. So, what exactly is resistant starch? Resistant starch is a non-digestible prebiotic that feeds our gut microbiome. Because it cannot be ‘digested’, it remains in its complete form when entering the colon. Unlike digestible starches, which are broken down into sugars by digestive enzymes in our stomaches, resistant starch is utilised by the bacteria in our colon. These beneficial bacteria feed on the starch to create a short chain fatty acid called Butyrate, or Butyric acid, which plays an important role in maintaining a healthy gut, as well as improving the communication between the gut and the brain. Butyrate is utilised by the body in many ways, one in which is the mediation of gut lining integrity, ensuring the regulation of the death of old cells and regrowth of healthier ones. This truth was a hard one for me to swallow. 🧠 Growing up, I dealt with a lot of internal emotional conflict which conditioned me to close myself off from others and wear this badge of overwhelming shame. 🧠 Within the last 8 months, I have begun to reflect and rationalize how damaging this suppression and shame I have carried with me the majority of my life has been on my capacity to connect and love others. 🧠 This constant struggle of living a lie and pretending to be someone I was not, ultimately manifested in a state of ill health, even though I was “doing everything right.” 🧠 The mind-body connection demonstrates first hand how unresolved emotions can manifest in physical symptoms and play a role in chronic pain, chronic illness, and autoimmune. 🧠 Emotions are not just stored in the brain. In Classical Chinese Medicine, the liver is the organ which processes emotions. Emotional suppression disrupts the flow of the vital force (Qi ), which can manifest as disease. 🧠 Just like environmental factors can contribute to inflammation in the body, so can our own unprocessed emotions. 🧠 While it’s important to partake in daily practices that cultivate health, addressing and healing the emotional body through feeling, processing, and then releasing emotions is just as important.
In the last couple of months I’ve placed a lot more importance on taking care of myself mentally and emotionally. I fought it for SO LONG bc I felt like I just couldn’t go there. I couldn’t go that deep and figure myself out. I couldn’t sit with myself and just be. One of the goals I set at the start of the new year was to start journaling and start meditating daily (the daily thing hasn’t exactly happened but I’m pretty proud of how consistent I have stayed ). SO much has changed since I made this commitment to myself. I’m calmer, happier, and more at peace with myself. I’m handling the pressures of med school (somewhat, for me 😂 ) gracefully - If I don’t get an A it’s no longer the end of the world. I can more easily recognize my patterns. I’ve been slowly able to let go of past negative experiences and not let those stories dictate my future. Within the last week I neglected my new practice of meditating and it’s funny how much I could tell. Especially yesterday when a minor inconvenience ruined the rest of my day. I wasn’t able to get out of the anxious and angry funk I was in. But last night I sat down and made just a few minutes to do it and I woke up this morning feeling back to the happy, calm, yet productive self I’ve been becoming. #mentalhealthmatters #meditation #journaling #naturopathicmedicine #medicalstudent #medstudent #health
Whether its for skin health, strong hair and nails, or supporting the gut, everyone is taking collagen. Collagen is our primary structural protein derived from fibroblasts that makes up our connective tissue. There are different types/flavors of collagen. Our body makes collagen and utilizes vitamin C as a cofactor to do so. Collagen is susceptible to degradation when in a pro-oxidative environment, which in turn creates an inflammatory response. Our ancestors consumed collagen from a “nose to snout” approach and cooking down the animal carcass. Bone broth was used by ancient cultures for immune support due to its rich bioavailability of nutrients. We can consume collagen in the form of #bonebroth which is rich in glycosaminoglycan’s, as well as amino acids such as glycine, glutamine, and proline. Proline, along with glycine, makes up the majority of collagen peptides. Bone broth is also a source of easily absorbable minerals such as zinc, calcium, and phosphorous. Many of these minerals are essential for our hormones and production of calming neurotransmitters. Glutamine is regenerative fuel for the enterocytes that line our gastrointestinal tract. Zinc carnosine, colostrum, glycine, and aloe also have been elucidated in the literature to support the gut mucosa. I am more a fan of bone broth because of the abundance of nutrients it provides in addition to the collagen peptides. Bone broth is commonly used as a tool to modulate the permeability of a “leaky gut” via restoration of the GAG layer and intestinal tight junctions. Many collagen peptides on the market are derived from the hide of animals. If you have MCAS or histamine issues, collagen may not be your friend! Like humans, animals store heavy metals they are exposed to in their bones. Therefore, there is the potential for lead exposure in the context of excessive consumption. Opt for organic, grass-fed/finished pasture-raised bones. I also like to infuse cilantro and rosemary into my bone broth for their chelation-like benefits and high antioxidant profile.
