Repost• @kiyacole #tbt I remember this cover was supposed to be released May 2006. Skai was 3 years old and not only did I shoot with her, I also shot with 2 other separate kids for potential covers. The magazine told us that either of the 3 kids would make the cover with me, that it wasn’t a guarantee that it would be me and Skai in the end but eventually they decided we were the best choice. So I anxiously waited for April so I could run to the newsstand to see us on the cover. To my surprise, not only was it not us; there was a Caucasian (blonde haired ) mom and daughter wearing the exact same outfits as us who were on the cover instead. Needles to say, I was disappointed and questioned why were not on the cover...what happened? What I later learned was that same year of 2006, they already had a baby/toddler of color on the cover and sadly publications back then didn’t like to feature more than 1 person of color on the cover of a magazine in a calendar year because they didn’t think people of color sold as many magazines. So our cover came out the following year 2007.. I will say, our issue of Parenting magazine was one of the most sold issues they ever had at that time. Goes to show you that sometimes society, and narrow-minded people get it wrong. *horrible angle of me. #ReachForTheSkai
The past decade has been great to say the least. Here are just a few highlights from the past few years.. Everything from being a part of the Jessie family, my own collection in Macy’s, being the inspiration for the new Marvel character #RiRiWilliams , going to The White House to meet the Obama’s, making Time’s list, my trip to Kenya, becoming a first time author...so many fabulous moments that I wouldn’t trade for anything! There are too many more to mention. I’m looking forward to 2020 and the next ten years!
Happy Holidays #ReachForTheSkai

It’s extremely unfortunate that I have to feel the need to address something that I’ve been reading lately on social media. I have little brown girls who look up to me so I want them to know that this is not ok. The answer is NO...I DO NOT and would NEVER bleach my skin! All of these old photos were taken in NYC, where I used to live. I didn’t live by a beach and didn’t spend a bunch of time outdoors as I do now because of the weather elements. I moved to California when I was 9, and they don’t call it Sunny California for nothing! I spend a lot of time in the sun here in California and take more beach vacations now than I ever did when I was in NY, so naturally my skin would be darker than what it once was. When I’m in the sun, I get dark!!! Just because my skin is a couple of shades lighter than it was 6 months ago, doesn’t mean I’m over here bleaching my skin! I just haven’t spent much time in the sun lately. I’m very proud to be brown! Whether it’s chocolate, caramel or latte-ANY shade of brown! So please stop with the ignorant comments about me bleaching my skin. I care too much about my health and body to poison myself like that. 👩🏽🦱👩🏾🦱👩🏿🦱 #StopTheTrolling
