Genesis Belanger’s group of new works will be on view at the 2019 edition of FIAC, marking her largest project in Europe. The American artist is known for creating liminal spaces that often point to society’s progressive, yet stagnant, movement in gender stereotypes and equality. Using porcelain and stoneware in soft, fondant hues, Belanger often presents fragments of a story, leaving viewers to wonder what comes next. While Belanger typically depicts scenes of femininity, for the installation at FIAC, she has imagined a man’s bathroom. In the bathroom, we see an array of objects that appear frozen in time. And while the man does not appear in the picture, he is not far removed, as the sink is running, food is half-eaten, and a blow-dryer is still letting out one last puff of air. 💨 — 📍FIAC, Grand Palais, Paris Booth A32 📆 October 17 – 20, 2019 — #GenesisBelanger #FIAC #FIAC2019 #Perrotin — Genesis Belanger, A Last Puff of Hot Air, 2019. De la Mora is a conceptual artist based in Mexico, whose work explores alternative modes of image-making. He works in a diverse range of materials including eggshells, sound screens, human hair, and found objects. #MADSAKI will present his latest series at Frieze London, marking a new direction in his work. MADSAKI's new series expresses his personal memories and emotions around the magnitude 9 earthquake in Japan on March 11, 2011. The earthquake caused a devastating tsunami that damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Popularly known in Japan as “311,” the events resulted in environmental, political and social repercussions that continue to affect Japanese society. Created with his signature spray painting method, MADSAKI reinterprets and abstracts images that have come to define 311. Emily Mae Smith’s newest body of work, soon to be on view at Perrotin Tokyo! ✨ Emily Mae Smith is known for her lively narrative oil paintings that offer sly social and political commentary. Her most prominent symbol is an anthropomorphized broom, which stems from Disney’s Fantasia (1940 ). Elmgreen & Dragset ironically reframe our worldview through their inoperable telescope, on view at Sculpture Milwaukee. 🔭 Elmgreen and Dragset’s large-scale bronze telescope, titled ‘A Greater Perspective,’ critiques how culture shapes and frames our environment. The phrase “powerless structures”—used by the duo to describe their works in the past— is fitting for this work, which is rendered useless due to its height and solid bronze material. The artists transform this the old-fashioned, romantic tool of discovery into a lingering monument, bereft of its purpose. The piece argues that the perspective used to shape our history was too narow-minded to accomodate our world today, urging us to broaden our own mindset. 🎶 Explore the music behind Xavier Veilhan's solo show ‘Channel Orange,’ on view now at Perrotin Shanghai! The title 'Channel Orange' is an homage to musician Frank Ocean. It is the name of his first album and refers to synesthesia — specifically the shade of orange that was conjured when Ocean first fell in love. Congratulations to XU ZHEN®, whose performance 'In Just a Blink of an Eye’ has been acquired by MOCA Los Angeles! 👏 A prolific and exciting artist, XU ZHEN®’s conceptually-driven practice encompasses a vast range of media, often employing humor, irony, and a sophisticated trickery. His installations deliberately propose non-mathematical equations of cultural and political ideologies by pairing natural and unnatural objects in his dense and poetic sculptures. — Gabriel Rico, ‘The Stone, The Branch And The Golden Geometry’ 📍Perrotin Seoul 📆 Through September 7, 2019 — @el_senor_del_veneno #GabrielRico #가브리엘 리코 #contemporaryart #taxidermy #Perrotin #PerrotinSeoul — Gabriel Rico, ‘That that is is between s s superior and inferior - The ordinary of God’, 2018. MADSAKI remixes Andy Warhol ⚡️ MADSAKI’s latest exhibition at Perrotin Hong Kong is inspired by none other than Andy Warhol. Though MADSAKI’s reproductions share basic composition, coloration and size with Warhol, it is the difference in execution, tone and feeling that make them his own. One distinction being medium: silkscreen for Warhol, spray paint for MADSAKI. While MASDAKI’s reproductions of art historical masterpieces usually serve to critique the western canon, this series is actually a meta-reflection on Warhol’s own critiques of mass culture and appropriation. — MADSAKI, ‘If I Had a Dream’ 📍 Perrotin Hong Kong 📆 On view until August 17, 2019 — @madsaki #MADSAKI #IfIHadADream #KaiKaiKiKi #aerosol #popart #AndyWarhol #Perrotin #PerrotinHK #PerrotinHongKong — MADSAKI, ‘Untitled’, 2019. Enter into Josh Sperling’s universe at Perrotin Tokyo! 🌀 Josh Sperling’s signature ‘squiggle’ installation expands across entire walls of the gallery. Inspired by the room’s existing architecture, the works are in constant dialogue with their surroundings. During conception, Sperling envisioned the room as a sort of diorama, viewable from outside through the gallery’s large wall of glass windows. With this in mind, he began his process with the compositional placement of various serpentine forms covering the existing wall, and then painted the work in a kaleidoscopic array of colors. — Josh Sperling, ‘Summertime’ 📍 Perrotin Tokyo 📆 August 10, 2019 — @joshsperling #JoshSperling #Summertime #minimalist #architecture #Perrotin #PerrotinTokyo — Exhibition view: Josh Sperling 'Summertime' at Perrotin Tokyo, 2019
Save the date! Emily Mae Smith’s first solo exhibition with Perrotin and her first-ever in Japan touches down in Tokyo on August 28. 🙌 On the heels of major museum exhibitions at Wadsworth Atheneum and Le Consortium, Brooklyn-based artist Emily Mae Smith will debut ‘Avalon’, an exhibition comprised of new paintings at Perrotin Tokyo. In her compositions, Smith develops a unique vocabulary — often combining art historical formalism with American pop culture and a meticulous technical proficiency — to examine sexual politics, identity and violence. Noted critic Barry Schwabsky astutely observes that Smith has the "freshness, energy, and go-for-broke ingenuity of a young artist relishing her process of self-discovery, while still also showing the impeccable technical fluency and conceptual sophistication that can only develop with considerable experience." — Emily Mae Smith - 'Avalon' 📍 Perrotin Tokyo 📆 August 28 - November 9, 2019 — @emaesmith #EmilyMaeSmith #savethedate #odalisque #figurativepainting #LeConsortium #WadsworthAtheneum #Perrotin #PerrotinTokyo — Emily Mae Smith, 'Gleaner Odalisque', 2019. Josh Sperling's vibrant sculptural paintings touch down at Perrotin Tokyo! Sperling’s work, now recognizable for his particular brand of chromatic geometry, offers pop minimalist confections on a newly expanded scale. Take, for instance, the squiggle wall produced by Sperling: an edge-to-edge composition of snaking forms which takes a whole wall as its host and support. Increasingly, Sperling’s work addresses the architecture in which it is exhibited. — Josh Sperling, ‘Summertime’ 📍 Perrotin Tokyo 📆 July 3 – August 10, 2019 — @joshsperling #JoshSperling #Summertime #minimalist #pop #design #graphicdesign #Perrotin #PerrotinTokyo — Courtesy Perrotin & Josh Sperling
Discover Maia Cruz Palileo’s work in ‘Them,’ our curated group show on view at Perrotin New York. Maia Cruz Palileo is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice focuses on migration and the permeable concept of home. Her paintings seek to reimagine the colonialist view of Filipino culture, often referencing historical portraits and narratives captured by nineteenth and twentieth century artists, photographers and journalists. Recontextualizing these naratives, Cruz Palileo reinvents scenes, questioning the nature of truth in historical artifacts and artworks, to imagine a more complete history. — 'Them’ group show 📍 Perrotin New York 📅 Until August 16 — #ThemGroupShow #MaiaCruzPalileo #figurativepainting #exhibition #pride #lgbtq #queerart #romance #love #Perrotin #PerrotinNewYork — Maia Cruz Palileo, 'The Duet', 2019. 🌹Wandering in the Louvre with Jean-Michel Othoniel in his installation ‘La Rose du Louvre’. . To mark the 30th anniversary of its Pyramid, the Musée du Louvre is hosting an original creation by Jean-Michel Othoniel. Inspired by a detail in a Rubens painting (his 'Wedding of Marie de’ Medici to Henri IV’ ), the display features six paintings and a book. Jean-Michel Othoniel sees the rose as an emblem of the museum. A triumphant symbol of power and passion, Rubens’unique interpretation of the ‘queen of flowers’ represents a woman’s destiny, her beauty, and her death-defying love, as well as the history of both France and the museum. — Jean-Michel Othoniel, ‘La Rose du Louvre’ 📍 Le Louvre, Cour Puget 📆 May 25, 2019–February 24, 2020 — @museelouvre @othoniel_studio #JeanMichelOthoniel #othoniel #louvre #OthonielAuLouvre #museedulouvre #30anspyramide #Rubens #rose #flower #Perrotin — Courtesy Perrotin & the artist.
